Canada Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)

The Federal Skilled Trades class provides a path to immigration for individuals with in-demand trade skills who can demonstrate the intention and ability to secure a job in their field and successfully settle in Canada. If you have an offer of employment or qualifying certifications in your field, you can make an expression of interest through the federal express entry system.

Am I eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Class?

You may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under this class if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have at least one job offer from a Canadian employer for at least one year, or you are in possession of a Certificate of Qualification from an approved Canadian institution or regulatory body
  • You can demonstrate basic proficiency in English or French, with a Canadian Language Benchmark (CBL) score of at least 5 for speaking and listening, and at least 4 for reading and writing
  • In the last five years, you have gained at least two years of work experience in the trade you are applying under
  • You can demonstrate the skills and experience needed to perform the essential tasks that are typically performed as part of the trade

 

Which trades qualify for the Federal Skilled Trades class?

The Federal Skilled Trades class currently encompasses the following skills categories on the National Occupation Classification (NOC):

  • Major group 72: trades in the industrial, electrical and construction industries
  • Major group 73: trades relating to maintenance and equipment operation
  • Major group 82: supervisors and technical specialists in the natural resources and agricultural sectors, and related production
  • Major group 92: supervisors and central control operators in processing, manufacturing, and utilities occupations
  • Minor group 632: chefs and cooks
  • Minor group 633: butchers and bakers
